The modern orchestra was taking shape, both in the operatic theatre and as a performing body in its own right, and new compositional forms were being developed around it, notably the concerto. In the high Baroque era, the process of displacement of these instruments by their brilliant and energetic children, like the trans- verse flute and violin, was well under way, but far from consum- mated.
